I would like to take a moment this month to reminisce …
Ahhh, I remember it like it was yesterday. I was a 25 year old who just opened Capitol Rehab and for some reason, it seemed that all of my patients were between 15-40 years old. They would come to me with chest injuries from trying to max out their bench press or hip strains from the 10K they were training for. Some would come in with acute back pain from their weekend basketball league or a sprained ankle from sliding to make a catch on their company softball team.
Fast forward 25 years, and now those same patients are between 40-70 and now the complaints sound a little different:
“I woke up this morning and my shoulder hurts.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing, I just went to bed and now my shoulder hurts.” Or, “My knees always ache. Is that because of the weather?”
Really, the most common thing the practitioners in my office hear is: “I don’t understand why I’m always a little fatigued, and sore. I think I’m eating right and trying to exercise, but it doesn’t seem to be working like it used to. Also, it seems that no matter how hard I try, I can’t do anything about this roll around my belly.” Or, “All the maintenance work I do doesn’t seem to be working like it used to.”

You may have heard about CoolSculpting. Let me tell you what it is and what it isn’t. Everybody has two types of fat in their body: Visceral fat is the fat that is deep, surrounds the organs, and can most easily be identified as the “large, round belly” that some men have. This fat tends to be harder to the touch. Visceral fat responds EXTREMELY WELL to exercise and diet. Subcutaneous fat, on the other hand, is the squishy fat you think of as the “inner tube around the waist” or the “inches that you can pinch.” This gets more common as we age and our bodies go through hormonal changes. This explains why many of us struggle to get that look we want even after adhering to a solid diet and exercise program. Subcutaneous fat DOES NOT RESPOND as well to diet and exercise.
And here’s where CoolSculpting enters the picture: CoolSculpting freezes and eliminates the fat pad that is subcutaneous fat. it biologically kills fat cells so they don’t regenerate. The result is a long-term investment in your body. Dr. Tapscott notes that there is a medical benefit to a process like CoolSculpting.
